Neural Correlates of the Y Chromosome in Autism: XYY Syndrome as a Genetic Model

Abstract

This report profiles neuroimaging, neurochemistry and neurophysiology studies of boys with 47,XYY syndrome in comparison to age matched typically developing peers as well as peers with idiopathic ASD (i.e. no known genetic etiology). Several key findings emerge:1) evoked response latencies of the auditory sensory response are delayed in XYY; 2) auditory mismatch fields, elicited by syllable contrasts in the auditory stream are also delayed; 3) white matter microstructure of key language related pathways appear immaturely developed in XYY and 4) level of the neurotransmitter, GABA, appear reduced in XYY.
