Compact, Low-Power, and High-Speed Graphene-Based Integrated Photonic Modulator Technology

Abstract

The goal of this ARO-funded research program was to develop the necessary infrastructure to enable a new class of modulators based on the hybrid silicon-graphene (HSG) material platform. Taking advantage of the high carrier mobility and the strong plasma dispersion effect of graphene combined with strong light confinement in compact Si-photonic devices, this program was aimed at developing a novel material and device platform, which can enable modulators with modulation speeds reaching 100 Gb/s and sub-100 fJ/bit energy consumption.
