Electric Field Enhanced Processing of Advanced Materials II: Complexities and Opportunities (Conference)

Abstract

The objective of this conference entitled, Electric Field Enhanced Processing of Advanced Materials II: Complexities and Opportunities was to bring together scientists and young researchers for state-of-the-art presentations and discussion. The submissions were oversubscribed so that several were transferred to posters which were distributed for display over four days of the meeting. More than half of the attendees were young people, students and post-docs. Great scientific progress was evident from the previous meeting three years ago. There was a perceptible shift towards emphasis on flash processing. Its application has progressed from sintering to phase transformations in multicomponent systems. The flash effect in single crystals is providing insights into basic science. Theoretical analysis with ab-initio and molecular dynamics is revealing the connection between Joule heating, phonon proliferation and defect generation. This idea was briefly mentioned during the first meeting held in 2016. The discussion led to a collaboration (among strangers prior to the meeting) which is producing these highly innovative scientific insights. This is but one example of how a conference such as this can lead to fresh results that would not have been otherwise possible. This conference series is becoming the heart-beat of this emerging field with great scientific and technological potential.
