Behavioral Observations Logging Toolkit (BOLT): Initial Deployed Prototypes and Usability Evaluations
Abstract
There is a need for valid tools and methods to support the depth/breadth of cyber assessments needed to facilitate and inform 1) training assessments, 2) advanced technology selection, 3) Human Systems Integration, and 4) operational test and evaluation. In such live evaluations, feedback is currently limited to after-action reviews supported by manual methods that often lack a detailed accounting or complete understanding of lengthy, complex, and federated cyber activities. Automated data management and digital collection capabilities are needed to support structured observational assessments and to reduce data collection, aggregation, and analytical bottlenecks. This report presents a software application called the Behavioral Observations Logging Toolkit (BOLT), which assists data collectors and analysis by digitally collecting information about the human machine interface in close proximity to the users of the system. Specifically presented and discussed in this report are requirements, functionality, use cases, prototypes, and evaluations of usability for several early iterations of the BOLT software.
