Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Activities on a Budget: Part 2. Sand

Abstract

In Part II of a series of hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics programs for students of all ages, we provide background information and specific guidance on materials and procedures for 10 activities related to sand. All activities are designed to be executable with minimum expense and hazard. Our program was developed as part of our ongoing Chemistry in the Library program, but is also appropriate for traditional and home school programs and museum classes. Background discussion includes key information about the composition, chemistry, and origin of sand as well as a brief discussion regarding sustainability issues.
