Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Activities on a Budget: Part III. Paper

Abstract

In Part III of a series of hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs for K12 students and interested adults, we provide background information and specific guidance on materials and procedures for 10 activities related to paper. All activities are designed to be executable with minimum expense and hazard. Our program was developed as part of our ongoing Chemistry in the Library program, but is also appropriate for traditional and home school programs and museum classes. Background discussion includes key information about the composition, chemistry, and origin of paper. The program was developed as part of a 2019 Chemists Celebrate Earth Week program jointly sponsored by the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory and the American Chemical Society.
