2018 U.S. Merchant Marine Service Academy Gender Relations Survey: Overview Report

Abstract

This report provides results of the 2018 Service Academy Gender Relations Survey (2018 SAGR) conducted by the Health and Resilience Division within the Office of People Analytics (OPA) at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA). This survey is the ninth of a series of surveys mandated by U.S. Code 10, as amended by Section 532 of the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 for the Military Service Academies. Though the aforementioned policy does not require USMMA to be assessed, USMMA has requested to participate since 2012. It assesses the incidence of unwanted sexual contact, sexual harassment, and related issues at USMMA. The survey results include rates of unwanted sexual contact, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination; a discussion of students perceptions of Academy culture with respect to unwanted sexual contact and sexual harassment; and the availability and effectiveness of sexual assault and sexual harassment training.
