2019 U.S. Merchant Marine Service Academy Gender Relations Focus Groups: Overview Report

Abstract

This report provides results of the 2019 U.S. Merchant Marine Service Academy Gender Relations Focus Groups (2019 SAGR) conducted by the Health and Resilience Research Division within the Office of People Analytics (OPA). These focus groups are the seventh of a series of focus groups mandated by U.S. Code 10, as amended by Section 532 of the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007. It provides a deeper insight and understanding of the climate and culture at the U.S. Military Academy (USMA), the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), and the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA). Although the aforementioned policy does not require USMMA to be assessed, the Academy has requested to participate since 2012. This report uses qualitative data from focus groups to explore the perception of issues related to sexual assault, sexual harassment, and other gender-related topics at the Academies including general culture and climate at the Academy, prevention of sexual assault and sexual harassment, reporting of such behaviors, and alcohol use at the Academies.
