Naval Undersea Warfare Center 150th Anniversary

Abstract

The Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport has celebrated our 150th Anniversary! Men and women have been right here in Newport, Rhode Island for 150 years with the noble purpose of providing undersea superiority to the United States Navy. We began in 1869 when Adm. David Porter actively campaigned for the creation of an experimental station to conduct hands-on experiments with torpedoes, mines, explosives, and electrical devices to determine how these new technologies should be best employed. Undersea Superiority! Yesterday Today and Tomorrow, was the theme for NUWC Division Newports 150thanniversary celebration. In this yearbook, we are spotlighting the years of dedication and hard work that have been a cornerstone of our command since our formation as the Naval Torpedo Station on Goat Island on July 29,1869, and the many ways in which we celebrated our anniversary with events throughout 2019.Special recognition and many thanks to our 150th Anniversary Steering Committee! With a focus on the current workforce, the Steering Committee devised a plan that involved the entire command. With help from the Division Newport public affairs team, each department of NUWC Division Newport was empowered to plan its own event commemorating the occasion, leading to the simultaneous planning of more than 20 fun and informative command-wide events that fostered esprit de corps among the workforce and celebrated NUWC Division Newports rich history. It was a comprehensive strategy to share NUWCs history and take pride in the fact that our workforce has been providing undersea superiority for the United States Navy for 150 years.
