Determinants of Small Business Innovation Research Performance

Abstract

This research explores a dataset of Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) projects that completed between 2015 and 2018. The exploration sought factors that contributed to the successful transition of projects from seed funds to long term external funds (e.g. commercialization). Key findings were tied to firm size and readability. First, a comparison of the smallest quartile of firms to the largest found a statistically significant better rate of transition for the small firms. Requirement readability correlates to transition performance. For the maintenance and sustainability portfolio segment, a use of lower grade level text (e.g. high readability) significantly correlated with success.
