Addressing the Health Concerns of VA Women with Sexual Trauma

Abstract

The purpose of our proposed research was to develop and assess a computer-delivered intervention (Safety and Health Experiences Program; SHE) that will provide a screening and brief behavior intervention for women Veterans with any lifetime sexual trauma. The scope of work has been completed, which includes the completion of informant interviews, the open trial, and the randomized control study. The randomized control study demonstrated that the recruitment of target population was feasible and that the intervention and study procedures were acceptable. The SHE intervention did not have a significant effect on the number of health risks within the 4-month follow-up period. SHE participants compared to participants in the control condition were significantly more likely to increase their mental health, alcohol and substance use treatment utilization over the 4-month follow-up period.
