A High-Voltage Capacitor Bank Design with a Built-in Spark Gap Switch

Abstract

A 20-kV, 38-kJ capacitor bank with a built-in spark gap switch was designed, built, and tested. Currents in excess of 400 kA were achieved. The motivation for the design, the details of the design, and the results of testing are described.
