Modeling and Simulation, Experimentation, and Wargaming - Assessing a Common Landscape

Abstract

The efficient and effective exploration of "what if" questions is fundamentally necessary to ensure the continued preeminence of U.S. military forces. Accomplishing this mission requires human ingenuity, insight and creativity, as well as the rigorous application of formal analytical methods. Principal among these methods are: modeling and simulation, experimentation and wargaming. In this white paper, we briefly review the current state of each, noting their fundamental inter-relationships, and identify opportunities for future focus and community investment. Our assessment also includes a discussion of MITRE capabilities across these three disciplines.
