Connect to Divide: Social Media in 21st Century Warfare

Abstract

In the last decade, social media-enabled information warfare (IW) emerged as a clear threat to the United States and liberal democracy. In that time, the US failed to develop an effective national security strategy to counter the threat. This paper will explore this threat and provide recommendations for two key issues: (1) the weaponization of social media against US national instruments of power and (2) the impact of social media platforms (SMP) on US democratic institutions.
