Gulf War Illness as a Brain Autoimmune Disorder
Abstract
The primary goal of this study was to compare neuroimaging, immune-related genetics, and laboratory tests in veterans with GWI to those obtained from veterans with known autoimmune disorders, to determine the extent to which GWI reflects autoimmune abnormalities. Published findings from 193 completed acquisitions demonstrated the following: (1) brain function in GWI is indistinguishable from that of established autoimmune conditions, (2) specific human leukocyte antigen genes protect against brain structural alterations common in GWI; and (3) peripheral inflammatory markers are highly associated with GWI symptom domains involving the brain as well as with alterations in brain structure and axonal integrity.
