Air Traffic Controller and Flight Crew Conduct of a No Closer Than Spacing Task utilizing a Cockpit Display of Traffic Information

Abstract

In order to examine a new concept called Cockpit Display of Defense information (CDTI) Assisted Pilot Procedure (CAPP), a Human-In-The-Loop (HITL) simulation was conducted for both air traffic controllers and flight crews. In CAPP, the flight crew's task was to make spacing judgments and manage speed using information provided on the traffic displays to stay at or outside of a spacing value issued by the controller.
