Individual Differences in Multiple-Task Performance: Status and Issues
Abstract
Multiple-task tests have been known to improve the predictive validity of pilot selection batteries since at least the 1930s. Despite their longstanding and widespread use for pilot selection, it is unclear what these test measure. The first goal of this report is to review the literature on individual differences in multiple-task performance. This will aid investigators in selecting the best task combinations for a pilot selection battery. The second goal is to review topics that have caused problems in assessing multiple-task performance. These include practice, task prioritization, response strategies, and data analysis. Each topic is described in detail and methods for reducing or eliminating the associated problems are given.
