Proposed Standard for Measuring Head-Supported Mass Properties
Abstract
Determining both the center of mass location and mass moments of inertia in military helmets and head-borne devices is critical to ensure Soldier safety and avoid performance degradation. These data are needed by researchers, materiel developers, acquisition offices, safety offices, and health hazard assessors during the research, development, and acquisition of head-borne military systems. This report provides a standard methodology, in the format of an ASTM International standard, for the accurate and repeatable measurement of mass properties of helmets and head-borne devices. This methodology is proposed for acceptance and standardization within the U.S. Army's Research, Development, Testing and Evaluation (RDT and E) and acquisition communities and for consideration by other Department of Defense (DoD) services.
