Supramolecular Recognition and Sensing of Hazardous Anionic Contaminants with Urea and Thiourea Based Synthetic Receptors

Abstract

Major Goals: (1) Synthesize a new series of urea/thiourea functionalized receptors containing variable dimensions, sizes, and spacers. (2) Investigate molecular interactions of the proposed receptors with selected anions (uranate, perchlorate, tungstate, sulfate, nitrate, cyanide, iodide and fluoride) using NMR, UV-Vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. (3) Study the liquid-liquid extraction of anions using gravimetric method, and spectroscopic analysis. (4) Calculate binding energies and electronic spectra using molecular modeling to gain a theoretical understanding of intermolecular interactions.
