2017 Workplace and Equal Opportunity Survey of Active Duty Members: Executive Report

Abstract

The 2017 Workplace and Equal Opportunity Survey of Active Duty Members was designed to fulfill the Congressional mandate outlined in Title 10 U.S. Code Section 481 to conduct Joint Service quadrennial assessments of race/ethnic issues. This executive report describes the trends in racial/ethnic relations, perceptions of policy effectiveness, and effectiveness of complaints processes pertaining to racial/ethnic harassment/discrimination among active duty members. Statistical analyses were conducted by race/ethnicity, service, and trend year (when applicable), with extensive data tables provided in the appendices. Results suggest that, although some progress has been made in the DoD to improve racial/ethnic relations, further work remains to be done to ensure members of all race/ethnicity experience improvement over time.
