Sergeants Major of the Army

Abstract

The purpose of this information paper is to familiarize you with the History of the Sergeant Major of the Army. General Harold K. Johnson with General Order number 29 established the position of Sergeant Major of The Anny on 4 July 1966. Since this positions establishment we have had thirteen Sergeant Majors of the Anny SMA's. The SMA is the Chief of Staff expert in all matters concerning the enlisted force. The sergeant Major of the Anny's job is to comment on the enlisted Anny, carrying to the Chief are the news god or bad, regarding the state of enlisted force based on his experience. SMA is rooted in the History ofthe NCO Corps, the rank of Sergeant Major and the increasing professionalism within the army over the years.
