Abstract
For thousands of years people have named geographical features; those rivers, mountains, plains, settlements and other features that are part of their world. Furthermore, throughout history groups have sought to memorialize their most important members. They often did this by naming something after them. We call these physical reminders monuments. The word monument comes from the Latin word "moneo" to remind. The names streets, buildings, and other monuments say to those who follow that "we remember." Memorials document history. This is the story of the people and organizations behind the names used at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The scores of men and women of distinction associated with the United States Armed Forces who have served at this "Dowager Queen of Frontier Posts".
