It is only fitting that the Maine Military Historical Society, Inc. should select as the first document for publication, for itsmembers and others interested in military history, the "After Action Report" of Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain. Thenarrative explodes the myth of "After Action Reports" as dull reading. The narrative draws the reader to the field of acrucial engagement in a turning point battle that probably altered the course of American history. What a field of battleit was! Historians have documented the significance of the Battle of Gettysburg and Lincoln immortalized its participants andtheir cause. Colonel Chamberlain's After Action Report shows us some of the reasons why these men deserve to beimmortalized
