U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy History 1980-1989

Abstract

The USA Sergeants Major Academy has gradually matured in the 1980s from a small officer-led organization to a much larger noncommissioned officer institution. At the beginning of the decade, fewer than 100 soldiers worked at the Academy; 25% of them were officers. By the end of the same decade, 114 soldiers worked at the academy; only 9% of them were officers. Before 19S5, the Commandant had a2CSM, Assistant Commandant, and six directorates reporting to him. Each directorate was led by a lieutenant colonel. The Director of Training contained the largest number of faculty members. The Director of Training was composed of the SMC (then called the Sergeants Major Academy) Instructors, FSC Instructors, Student Distribution Center and Library. Their mission was to train the students attending the resident courses. The second largest directorate was the Director of Training Development. Their mission was to develop the training for the resident Sergeants Major Course and First Sergeants Course and the core curriculum of PLDC and ANCOC. The FSC, ANCOC, and PLDC were each represented by a division of training developers within the Director of Training Development. The SMC Curriculum Division, larger than the other three, had separate divisions for the four areas of study--Military and World Studies, Resource Management, NCO Development, and Leadership and Human Relations. The Director of Support handled much of the internal housekeeping functions for the Academy. Chief among these responsibilities was the Student, Staff and Faculty Company, Administrative Support Division (including Academic Records), the NCO Museum, and Management and Coordination. Management and Coordination contained the Resource Management and Logistics functions. The two remaining directorates, Director of Evaluation and the Director of Extension Training, rounded out the organization.
