Methods of Training (Provisional)
Abstract
1. MISSION OF THE ARMY. --The mission of the army is to utilize speedily and effectively the national resources to the extent authorized by Congress and required by the particular conditions, and to overcome the enemy by all available means. The primary objective will be the destruction of the armed forces of the enemy and this can be attained only by offensive action, both strategical and tactical. 2. MILITARY TRAINING, DEFINITION. -- Military training, in its broader sense, embraces national military education, and military training proper. National military education teaches every individual an appreciation of his military duties and responsibilities to the nation. This appreciation involves correct valuation of the importance of the life and prosperity of the nation, of the adoption and application of proper measures of national defense, the military training of the national potential man-power, and the preliminary military organization of the national agencies of manufacture, commerce, agriculture, transportation, and finance. Military training proper consists of the military training of the authorized active and potential military forces of the nation. 3. OBJECT OF TRAINING. -- a. The ultimate object of military training is to enable the army to win tactical decisions and reap the maximum benefits therefrom. All must be imbued with the spirit of the offensive and the knowledge that through it alone a positive decision can be reached. However, the field forces must be trained to make full use of defensive tactics, when there is no doubt as to the appropriateness of the occasion for their use. The immediate object of training is the development of an efficient fighting force, capable of great and rapid expansion in war.
