The Status of Test, Evaluation, Verification, and Validation (TEV and V) of Autonomous Systems

Abstract

In support of a US/UK Technical Exchange Meeting on Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy Collaboration, IDA was asked to prepare a summary of academic work related to Test and Evaluation, Verification and Validation (TEV and V) of autonomous or AI systems. This paper enumerates TEV and V challenges that have been identified by the commercial, academic, and government autonomy research communities, describes the focus of current academic research programs, and highlights areas where current research leaves unaddressed gaps in capability.
