A Collection of Analytical Results Related to the ASW Protection of Convoys and Carriers

Abstract

This paper is a collection of diverse analytical results that are related to several aspects of a common problem: the defence of carriersagainst torpedo-firing submarines. This work is not in any sense a complete treatment of those issues, but is rather a set of analytical vignettes.Examined are: (1) escort response time t o a flaming datum; (2) the probability of detecting the attacker after a flaming datum; (3) ship/submarine exchange ratio as depending on the number of submarine attacks within a convoy; (4) the trade-off between screening and flaming datum prosecution; and (5) carrier survival probability after a submarine has penetrated its screen.
