Development of Knitted Flame Resistant Fabrics Made From Wool and Aramid Blend Yarn for Next-to-Skin Clothing Applications

Abstract

This report documents efforts performed, between 20 July 2005 and 30 April 2008, under a Broad Agency Announcement contract between the American Sheep Industry Association and the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command - Soldier Center (CCDC-SC). This study investigated if an inherently machine washable and flame resistant fabric could be achieved in a very lightweight knitted structure that would not only be less expensive but also more comfortable as a protective garment for next-to-skin wear in all climate conditions compared to a 100 percent aramid garment currently in service. Additionally, the product developed would comply with Berry Amendment regulations and offer protection against fire hazards to soldiers. Much of the development work was carried out at supervised commercial facilities so that an approved product would be commercialized quickly and with minimum delay.
