Activities And Status Of Civil Defense In The United States

Abstract

In 1961 the civil defense program of the United States was revitalized and was directed toward providing protection for millions of people against radioactive fallout in the event of a nuclear attack. A long-range program was recommended by the President to identify existing fallout shelters and to provide new ones. The Office of Civil Defense was created in the Office of the Secretary of Defense to carry out this function. In 1964 responsibility for civil defense was transferred to the Department of the Army. The General Accounting Office (GAO) made this study to evaluate the accomplishments of the civil defense program over the past 10 years.
