U.S. Military Drawdown in Afghanistan: Frequently Asked Questions

Abstract

In 2021, a year that will mark the twentieth anniversary of the entry of U.S. troops into Afghanistan, U.S. forces there are at the lowest level since 2001 due to the Trump Administrations reduction of U.S. forces to 2,500 and its conditional commitment to the Taliban to withdraw fully by April 2021. Members of Congress have expressed a range of views about the drawdown and are likely to continue to closely scrutinize the drawdowns impact on a range of U.S. policy interests.
