Abstract

One of the most spectacular feats of the United StatesArmy during World War II was its expansion from a force of235,000 men in May 1940, to nearly six million men by1945. No less a personage than Winston Churchill, thegreat wartime leader of Britain, declared that themagnificent American management of the growth of itswartime forces (coupled with its lend-lease supplies to itsAllies) had no precedent in history.
