Legislative Oversight: DoD Appearances at Congressional Hearings During 1985

Abstract

We reviewed a DOD information on hearings for 1985 to determine (1) the number of congressional committees and subcommittees (including panels and task forces) requesting DOD testimony at hearings, (2) the number of hearings, (3) the number of appearances by various DOD organizations, (4) the number of various organizational positions appearing as witnesses, (5) the organizational positions appearing most often, (6) the subjects of hearings, an a (7) the hearings subjects appearing most often. In order to reply to your request in a timely manner, were lied on hearings data compile a by the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) (Legislative Affairs). The hearings data comes from witness logs submitted by the OSD (Comptroller) and the legislative liaison offices of the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force. The information shows in abbreviated form the names and positions of witnesses, the committees and subcommittees holding hearings, the subjects of the hearings, and the date of the hearings. This information was not shown in all instances. For example, in some instances, positions of witnesses were not shown and, therefore, we were unable to identify the positions of some witnesses. Also, for some hearings, witnesses were not shown. In addition, the information did not show backup witnesses. We aid not verify the accuracy of the information provided by DOD.
