U.S. Allied and Partner Support for Taiwan: Responses to a Chinese Attack on Taiwan and Potential U.S. Taiwan Policy Changes
Abstract
As the Biden administration assesses its Taiwan policy, it is important to examine how U.S. allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific may respond to a potential conflict over Taiwan. Support from regional countries will be critical to the U.S. ability to defend Taiwan from an attack by the Peoples Republic of China (PRC). This testimony is divided into three sections that explore (1) factors that influence the willingness of U.S. allies and partners to aid Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack, (2) how regional countries may respond if the United States does not come to Taiwans defense, and (3) how U.S. allies and partners may view a U.S. Taiwan policy shift away from strategic ambiguity.
