Navy DDG-51 and DDG-1000 Destroyer Programs: Background and Issues for Congress

Abstract

This report presents background information and potential oversight issues for Congress on the Navys Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) and Zumwalt (DDG-1000) class destroyer programs. The Navys proposed FY2021 budget requests funding for the procurement of two DDG-51s. Decisions that Congress makes concerning destroyer procurement could substantially affect Navy capabilities and funding requirements, and the U.S. shipbuilding industrial base. For an overview of the strategic and budgetary context in which the DDG-51, DDG-1000, and other Navy shipbuilding programs may be considered, see CRS Report RL32665, Navy Force Structure and Shipbuilding Plans: Background and Issues for Congress, by Ronald O'Rourke.1
