A Survey of Saddam's Audio Files 19782001: Toward an Understanding of Authoritarian Regimes

Abstract

This study presents transcripts from captured Iraqi audio recordings of meetings between Saddam Hussein and his inner circle. It, and the larger body of captured recordings on which it rests, will provide governmental and academic researchers with important insights into the inner-workings of a recent US adversary and the nature of authoritarian regimes more generally. The study arranges transcripts according to Saddam's views on the following topics: (1) the United States; (2) Israel; (3) the Arab World; (4) the Iran-Iraq War; (5) the 1991 Gulf War; (6) Weapons of Mass Destruction; (7) the UN Special Commission (UNSCOM) and UN sanctions and (8) the defection of Hussein Kamil. In addition to providing readers with valuable primary source data and analysis, it draws researchers attention to the benefits of conducting future analysis using the captured records in the Conflict Records Research Center.
