Abstract

The Battle of Long Island on 27 August 1776 was not the first engagement of theRevolutionary War; however it was the first major battle after the signing of the Declaration ofIndependence on 4 July 1776. The battle signified the beginning of a war for freedom fromEngland and a realization of the power of the British military.
