A Comparison of Coconut and Sesame Oils With Chlorhexidine and Listerine as Antimicrobial and Anti-Plaque Agents

Abstract

Displeasure and dissatisfaction with the side effect profiles of conventional medical therapies has led to the exploration of diverse approaches to prevent or treat common diseases. Oil-pulling, in complementary and alternative medicine, is a procedure that involves swishing oil in the mouth for oral and systemic health benefits. While it has been used extensively as a traditional Indian folk remedy, sufficient research and evidence is lacking to demonstrate the effects of oil pulling on oral health.
