Implementation of a Standardized Intraoperative Handoff Tool for Anesthesia Providers

Abstract

The Institute of Medicine identified poor quality of communication in healthcare as a contributing factor to poor patient outcomes. The handoff of care between anesthesia providers in the intraoperative environment is a critical period for thorough and accurate communication of patient information. Implementation of a standardized handoff tool can increase the quality of communication with a subsequent provision of safer patient care and decreased adverse outcomes. To implement and evaluate the use of a standardized intraoperative handoff tool for anesthesia providers to improve communication and patient safety during transitions of care.
