An Evaluation of Utilization of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Protocols at Travis Air Force Base

Abstract

Postoperative complications (POCs) following total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) lead to prolonged recovery time, increased length of stay (LOS), higher healthcare costs, and provide a negative surgical experience for the patient. Postoperative complications can include surgical site infections, blood loss more significant than expected; unplanned returns to the operating room, and pulmonary complications. Evidenced based enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols are multi-modal, perioperative care pathways that have been shown to decrease hospital length of stay and decrease post-operative complications. Clinical Question or Purpose: In patients receiving total hip arthroplasties and total knee arthroplasties at David Grant Medical Center (DGMC), how do the current protocol practices compare to ERAS protocols recommended by the literature?
