Psychological Well-Being and Functioning of Military Service Members Following Exposure to Suicide within the Military Unit

Abstract

Suicide remains a public health problem within the United States military. Suicide survivors are individuals left to grieve after a suicide loss. When a service member or veteran dies by suicide, members of their military unit are a subset of suicide survivors who are exposed to the loss. To date, the grief experiences, overall distress, and functioning of military unit members following a loss of one of their own have not been closely examined.
