The Analysis of Tooth Cementum for the Histological Determination of Age and Season at Death of Active Duty Military Members

Abstract

The techniques involved with tooth cementum annulation analysis have been evolving over recent years. However, many previous studies originate from archaeological and zoological contexts. There are currently few published articles comparing this method to teeth of individuals of known age and date of tooth extraction. This technique is based on the fact that cementum is laid down in one pair of dark/light bands per year with the color of the outermost band potentially reflecting the season at death. It is our interest to improve upon these techniques and establish a reproducible method to determine the age and season of death.
