A History of the Organizational Development of Psychiatry in the U.S. Army: Colonial Period to World War II

Abstract

This monographs intent is to present a series of essays on the history of U.S. Army psychiatry up until World War II. There isnt anything in these essays that can not be found in the published literature. Literature surrounding this topic is quite voluminous, and one would be hard pressed to organize and store it. These introductory essays are designed for those persons having an interest in U.S. Army psychiatry, but lack the time, funds, or means to secure a multitude of published source material. This monograph is not mean to be encyclopedic in scope or the final word. Instead, it introduces the subject matter, provides references for each essay, and assists the reader in navigating through selected topics the author has chosen, trusting they are of similar interest to the reader. The reader needs to keep in mind that the essays pertain exclusively to U.S. Army ground troops. Thus, other military services such as the Navy, Marines, and Army Air Force are not included as each deserves separate attention and monographs of their own. Neither is class, gender, and race as lenses for historical analysis discussed in these essays as each one also deserves a monograph on its own. There is no pretense of systematic or comprehensive narration in the essays. Thus, there is no attempt to break new ground or to provide new perspectives or insights. Rather, the essays are designed to stir interest in U.S. Army psychiatry with a view for the reader to pursue a more comprehensive study in U.S. Army medical history, and to thereby learn to appreciate its heritage. Finally, these essays may be of particular interest to university students pursing a research paper or project in U.S. Army medical history and to U.S. Army Medical Officers who are interested in a quick introduction to their services history of psychiatry up until the World War II era.
