Need for a DOD Shelf-Life Program Administrator

Abstract

Special attention is needed in the Department of Defense to see that shelf-life materials do not deteriorate in storage before they are issued for use. GAO identified inconsistent and inadequate management practices which demonstrate that the current lack of attention can result in excessive management costs or unnecessary disposal of material. There needs to be one focal point - a DOD Shelf-Life Program Administrator - to review and evaluate the program on a continuing basis and to recommend actions to improve program management and eliminate inconsistent or wasteful practices.
