Counter-Insurgency Operations in the Philippines and Algeria

Abstract

Even though the counter-insurgency (COIN) operations that we face today may differ from past counter-insurgencies, we should study the successes and failures of those campaigns to facilitate future operations in our quest to fight the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). The tactics, techniques, and procedures the insurgent organization use are similar in what we see in Afghanistan and Iraq today. Understanding the political ramifications, infrastructure, and the power of the local population are imperative in order to have a successful counter-insurgency.
