NCOs in the American Army, 1775-1865

Abstract

The history of the noncommissioned officer and the United States Army began in1775 with the birth of the Continental Army. The American Army did not duplicate the British but mixed the traditions of the French, British and Russian armies into a uniquely institution. As years progressed, the American political system, with its dislike for the government, social attitudes and the vast westward expanses distance the U.S. Army noncommissioned officer from the European counterparts. This created a true American noncommissioned officer.
