Reconstruction and the American Indian Pacification

Abstract

Counterinsurgency operations are found in the Armys history as far back as the American Civil War and the American Indian Pacification campaigns of the late 1800s. These events can be used as prime teaching examples for todays military leaders of what can go right and of what can go wrong whenever the Army attempts to take on guerrilla type elements that are mixed in with the civilian population. Todays operations in Iraq and Afghanistan can be compared to both of these events in history and show that some of the same mistakes are repeated.
