Flagging Overweight Soldier

Abstract

Webster defines ethics as "the system or code of morals of a particular person, religion, group, or profession". FM 22-100 defines ethics as "the principles, rules and standards of proper conduct defined by an organization or profession for the governance of its own members". Both definitions apply to an ethical dilemma I encountered when I was a First Sergeant. I had a company commander who put me in an ethical dilemma when he refused to flag a Soldier for being overweight. He knew the right thing to do was to flag the Soldier but because of the circumstances surrounding this Soldier, it was difficult for him to choose the hard right over the easy wrong.
