H100 Argumentative Essay

Abstract

Over the last century there have been several true counterinsurgency campaigns. It is critical for todays modern combat leader to study the lessons of these earlier campaigns. The basic tenets of counterinsurgency have not changed for hundreds of years. Many of the tactics and strategies the United States Army used in the Philippines in the early twentieth century and the French Army used in Algeria in the 1950s are still relevant on todays battlefield in Iraq and Afghanistan. Devastating offensive operations, solid intelligence, civil projects and cultural understanding were essential in defeating their insurgencies. However, with the ever changing advances in technology, the coverage area and speed of information and the global mobility of todays insurgents, the application of counterinsurgency techniques must be adjusted. The U.S must combine the proven techniques of the past with modern advancements and a cultural understanding to apply full spectrum warfare against todays modern insurgent.
