Proof of Concept: Baseline Data Acquisition and Numerical Modeling to Evaluate the Fate and Transport of PFAS within the Vadose Zone

Abstract

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) source areas resulting from the use of aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) products exist fully or partially within the vadose zone. However, transport processes for AFFF solutions and PFAS within the vadose zone are not currently well understood. This limited-scope project was conceived to begin to address this knowledge gap. The overriding goal of this project was to develop a numerical tool with which to support DoD efforts to characterize the PFAS source term in the vadose zone environment. Such a model would also improve hydrogeological risk assessments and evaluation of remedial alternatives and/or monitoring strategies.
