Demonstrating the Benefits of Long-Duration, Low-Cost Flow Battery Storage in a Renewable Microgrid

Abstract

This report summarizes Ameresco's investigation of long duration stationary energy storage for deployment within military microgrids. Objectives of this work focused on assessing the state of the art of Vanadium Redox Flow battery technology and studying the extent to which it can reduce use of fossil fuel fired diesel generators for critical load support. The work herein characterizes statistical probability of critical load support during utility outages of up to 168 hours and identifies the economic value energy storage could generate during grid-connected operation for five military installations throughout the continental United Sates.
